ENGLISH PHONEMIC MAP

THE PHONEMIC CHART

Scansione_edited.jpg

Ever since Adrian Underhill showed me how to teach  phonetics, at the LEND Lingua e Nuova Didattica congress in Portonovo more than twenty years ago, I never fail to dedicate at least one lesson to  understanding  and use of the map  that he devised. And the students of all types of schools, both of the linguistic high school where I deepen with the use of his text Sound Foundations and games on transcriptions  phonetic , which to professional institutes where I work more on oral, find this map very useful for developing awareness of the relationship between phoneme and grapheme in the English language.

For examples of how to use it, see my article (2007) “Listening skills and their teaching with the aid of new technologies”, in Azzaro G. (edited by) Teaching foreign languages. Theories and practices for the training of qualified teachers
